The long-mooted documentary on The Beach Boys is nearing release, and the trailer is now available to watch.

"They were participating in the creation of the California dream," rock 'n' roll historian Josh Kun says at one point in the clip, and it's hard to argue.

Since their hit-making origins in the early sixties, the surfin' enthusiasts changed the face of pop music in their home country, almost single-handedly conjuring the idealistic vision of life in California.

It's likely why they consistently drew comparisons with their peers from across the pond in The Beatles, whose rivalry spurred both parties on to greater achievements.

Selling over 100 million records worldwide, The Beach Boys are undoubtedly one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed groups of all time, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to celebrate.

The official documentary will delve into their lasting influence and experiences, and here's everything you need to know about it:

The Beach Boys will explore the humble, family-based beginnings of the band, their ascent to global fame, and the fallout that came from those experiences.

With never-before-seen archival footage, the documentary will offer an intimate insight into the lives behind the influential music and the pandemonium of screaming fans that engulfed them.

Alongside interviews with bandmates, the documentary will also feature include interviews with other luminaries such as Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham, soul singer Janelle Monáe, Ryan Tedder, and Don Was.

"Man, they made me wanna go to where they had cars, and girls in bikinis, and sun," Was says in the trailer.

"The Beach Boys is a celebration of the legendary band that revolutionised pop music, and the iconic, harmonious sound they created that personified the California dream, captivating fans for generations and generations to come," a press that accompanies the trailer says.
