American singer Dr John has died, aged 77

American singer Dr John has died at the age of 77, following a heart attack.

The New Orleans musician died on Thursday (June 6), his official Twitter account announced.

Dr John was known for his unique combination of blues, pop, jazz, boogie woogie and rock and roll.

A statement said: "Towards the break of day June 6, iconic music legend Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr, known as Dr John, passed away of a heart attack.

"The family thanks all whom shared his unique musical journey & requests privacy at this time. Memorial arrangements will be announced in due course."

Born Mac Rebennack, Dr John was originally a session musician who recorded with artists such as the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Sonny & Cher, Frank Zappa, Harry Nilsson, and many others.

His debut album as a lead singer was 1968’s Gris-Gris, and he later released dozens of albums.

He scored a hit in 1973 with 'Right Place Wrong Time', and famously appeared in the Band’s final concert film The Last Waltz.

In recent years, he released the 2012 album Locked Down, and his 2014 Louis Armstrong tribute Ske-Dat-De-Dat: The Spirit of Satch.

Dr John was also the inspiration for Jim Henson's Muppet character, Dr. Teeth.
