Rami Malek To Play Queen's Freddie Mercury In Biopic

A biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury may finally be going ahead - with Mr Robot actor Rami Malek taking the lead role

The news was seemingly broken by X-Men director and producer Bryan Singer, who has been in talks about taking the director's chair.

Singer posted a picture of the band on his Instagram page, along with a series of hashtags including #bohemianrhapsody, #queen, #freddiemercury, #brianmay, #rogertaylor and #johndeacon.

He added: "Looking forward to @ramimalek playing #Freddie."

Sacha Baron Cohen had originally been expected to play the flamboyant singer but withdrew in 2013, apparently over creative differences.

The Ali G and Borat star revealed earlier this year there had been a storyline disagreement with one of Queen's members.

Ben Whishaw has also been linked with the role.

The movie, which has been in development for eight years, is due to be called Bohemian Rhapsody after the band's huge hit single which spent nine weeks at the top of the charts.

The almost six-minute song - written by Mercury - was also the Christmas number one in 1975.

The movie, which is expected to begin shooting in early 2017, will be produced by Graham King and Queen manager Jim Beach.

It has been reported that The Theory Of Everything screenwriter Anthony McCarten may also be involved.

Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor will be involved with the music.
