See how learndirect gave Rob the confidence and skills to get back to work after suffering a near fatal car crash.
Rob left school with some qualifications, however a near-fatal car crash some years ago left Rob with memory difficulties and completely destroyed his confidence in his abilities. As a consequence, Rob found it difficult to hold down a permanent job and constantly drifted in and out of employment, until one day he decided to change his life with the help of learndirect.
Rob, now 40, said: “I was a little nervous before I went to the centre but the staff soon put me at ease. I hadn’t been able to do any training or work for three years but I knew I needed some training before I could get a job so I went along to the local centre. Everything was explained very simply and you could take the time you needed to work through the course, so there was no pressure involved. It was very rewarding to see my progress as the weeks went on, each day my memory improved and I was able to develop more confidence in my abilities.
“I made a lot of friends whilst learning at the centre, particularly with my tutor Dorothy, and I now feel really motivated to keep on learning: I have already done my literacy and numeracy at level two and now I am in the middle of my European Computer Driving Licence qualification.
“I am also in the middle of a long-term work placement that I secured with the help of learndirect and Performance Through People. I was told about Performance through people by my local job centre. Through this I am able to do a voluntary job placement for 16 hours a week, giving me time to do my learndirect course in the afternoon. The two work together really well as I am able to use all of the skills I have learnt so far, carrying out office admin tasks and most importantly, meeting lots of new people, something I would never have had the confidence to do before learning with learndirect.”
